Tutor Training

On Wednesday, October 21st, Bonnie Anderson, Kevin Richardson, Sean Herle, John Zyss, Cary Rinehart, Marilyn Halk, and Caroline Sosa went to Washington Elementary School to receive training for the tutoring program. We learned that each of us would have a specific curriculum to follow, the daily schedule, and who each of our five students would be. Tutoring will begin on Monday, November 2 from 3:15-4:15. Pray for us to be effective!  - Caroline Sosa

Mission Opportunity

Gabriel  Edmondson,   one  of  our  youth,  has  the

opportunity to attend a Youth with a Mission (YWAM) Discipleship Training School beginning January 4, 2010 at Lakeside, MT campus.

Gabe can use your support in a couple of ways:  (1)through prayer for safe travel; healing from back pain and no further problems develop; God to prepare and change his heart to minister to people he will encounter daily; and financial need of $7,000 will be met. (2) financial support to cover housing, food and travel expenses for six months.  Note:  as a student, any funds donated are not tax deductible.

And, finally, if you would like to "hire" Gabe for any odd jobs prior to his departure please call him, 995-3816.

Please feel free to contact Gabe or his parents,  Graeme & Marie Edmondson, 916-995-7621 if you have questions!

Health Care Mini Faire

Two nurses took over 20 blood pressures in less than an hour after church, Oct 18th.   This was the Health Care Ministries' first Blood Pressure Clinic and we are grateful for those who came and participated.  Our next one will be in December so be looking for the date as you attend Sunday worship.  Thanks for the helpful comments to make "clinic" better.  The plan is to provide this service to the congregation every couple months.  We appreciate the patience each of you showed while waiting for your turn to get a little "bear hug" on your arm.  We also had an information table with brochures on diabetes and medic alert jewelry.  We will be having more information tables in the future.  If you want to obtain information on a specific subject or want to volunteer to help with future health related events - just call the church office  - 443-6537 and leave a message on the nurse’s extension - #17 or call Bill Dean at 444-1574.   Next BP Clinic - December 20, 2009.  Blessings and peace (it lowers blood pressure!)                                                              - Jonette Kiesow, RN, FCN

With Love, Washington Elementary

On "Be the Church" Sunday, September 13, FBC put together kits for the 253 students of Washington Elementary School.  Earlier we had given $700 to the school towards the Sly Park field trip for sixth graders.  The response?  Check out the bulletin board by the parlor to see some of the 75 handwritten letters the church received from students and teachers.   Some notes are creatively illustrated, and all offer glimpses into the hearts of the sixth graders down through the kindergarteners.  Here are some excerpts from the letters:

Thank you for helping us because we were out of equipment.  We will not forget you . . .

Paper is the thing we needed most.  We always use paper.  And the pencils and pens, we need them to write on paper for homework and other stuff . . .

I wanted to say thank you for the pencil boxes and notebooks you guys donated.  Now the pencil box is giving me more space in my desk . . .

Thank you for the school supplies.  That must have cost a lot.  Now I do not have to use a little pencil anymore.  My mom and dad can't buy me pencils because we have little money  . . .

We're happy that you donated $700 for our camping trip. Sly Park is like a forest.  It's so beautiful.  We are going to sleep in a cabin, go for a mile-hike, and have a campfire . . .

I am really happy you chose our school.  Thanks for all the paper you gave us.  We were going to have to buy more. The paper costs a lot because we have 36 students in our classroom. We needed markers for the white boards . .

I'm going to use my eraser for all the mistakes I make when I'm writing a paper or an essay . . .

I wanted a whiteboard marker and my mom was too busy to get me one, so I and our whole class appreciate everything you've done for us . . . .

I love going to school.  School is one of my main hobbies.  It means so much to me that you care about my future.  I love the new pencil box your church donated.  It helps me stay organized . . .

Thank you for the school supplies - the crayons, Expo markers, paper.  They are very useful at home and in class.  Now about Sly Park, I am really excited.  Thank you for the bus money.  I did not want to walk the whole way.  I would get leg cramps . . .

Thank you for donating money for our bus to Sly Park.  I am so excited to go.  I just can't wait to go.  We're going to be there for 5 days away from home and school.  And they are on school days . . .

I promise that I will take good care of the pencil box and everything in it . . .

I come from a family with a single mom.  My mom goes to college.  I have a little brother who I help to take care of when my mom does her homework.  He is three years old and very destructive.  I don't really get to go many places because my mom doesn't have much money.  I am very excited to go to Sly Park.  It was nice that you donated this money to our class . . .

I can tell that it will be good there at Sly Park.  It's gonna be fun.  I wish you guys would come with us.  Well, good-bye and have a good year . . .

Thank you for the school supplies. They are really helpful for us.  With all of the budget cuts, it is hard for some people to get school supplies.  Also, thank you for giving us money for the bus to Sly Park.  We are all excited to go camping for a week.  You are not the only ones helping the community.  You have inspired us to help too.  We are going to have a jogathon to earn money, actually food, to give to the homeless shelter . . .

The Sly Park money was very helpful.  Before you made the donation, we had to pay $280 per student.  Now we only have to pay $230 per student.  We now have less money to pay and less fundraising to do for our trip . . .

The only subject I don't really like is Ancient Civilization Social Studies, but that doesn't mean I am not going to pay attention.  Well, thank you for the supplies and donation and for being helpful and nice.  God is with you . . .

We really appreciate what you guys have done to our school.  I hope that we can do something to pay you guys back.  I hope that you like our letters . . .
